VIVE LE TOUR

To some (including Teacake), July can mean only one thing – Le Tour De France. As usual, this year's Tour will no doubt bring plenty of excitement and drama, with the top cyclists in the world sparring with one another across 3430.5km (2131.6 miles) of French road. Over the course of 21 days, they'll face 10 flat stages, 6 mountain stages (with 4 summit finishes!), 3 medium mountain stages, 1 individual time trial, and 1 team trial. There will also be 2 rest days thrown in for good measure

Great Britain has 5 riders completing in the Tour - kept your eyes peeled for the following: Mark Cavendish, HTC-Columbia - David Millar, Garmin-Cervelo Ben Swift, Sky - Geraint Thomas, Sky - Bradley Wiggins, Sky.

Watch the days highlights on ITV4 at 7pm most days! Eurosport also has good coverage!

Having received a nice email from Tom Bingham this afternoon I thought I'd share some of his great Illustration work with you. Tom is an illustrator based in the North of England. Using a variety of materials, his work is both experimental and abstract creating bold, colourful and textured images.

Tom graduated with a first class honors from our old university The Manchester School of Art, and with a clients like BBC, May68 and M&C Saatchi under his belt I am sure he will draw far!

We look forward to meeting Tom very soon to see and hear more!

British Folk: Part One is the first in a trilogy of small hand bound books by photographer James Pearson-Howes and designed by Ben Freeman, documenting bizarre and eccentric British folk traditions. Part one features the shamanic like Hunters Moon Morris, the often dangerous Tar Barrels, the peculiar Whittlesea Straw Bear and colorful Red Leicester Morris Men.These events are no longer about exorcising the town’s demons or getting better crops, they are about being part of a community. It is the people from these communities taking part in these events that the trilogy of books will focus upon. The book is a limited addition, litho printed of 250 with a buckram cloth hand bound spin. British Folk Part Two, which is scheduled to go to print later this year, will feature The Obby Oss, The Pearly King and Queen and Lewis Bonfire Night.

Bit of a delayed post from our recent adventures in Amsterdam due to how busy the factory is at present but here are a few snippets. Despite the weather being a touch damp we covered much of the city by bike and managed to pop in to see our friend Ewald as well. Highlights included the fantastic windmill brewery (linked here) and as ever the array of exquisite typo to be found around every corner. Old haunts were sampled along with many halves of fine Dutch beer - heildronk!

Alfred Wainwright (1907-1991)born in Blackburn, Lancashire will always be known for his famous Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells which he compiled between 1952 and 1966. These handwritten and hand-drawn works of art have given inspiration to all true fellwalkers for the past forty years. For this labour of love, as he called it, he was awarded the MBE. His seven-volume Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells, published between 1955 and 1966 and consisting entirely of reproductions of his manuscript, has become the standard reference work to 214 of the fells of the English Lake District.

The Story of a Mug

'The Story of a Mug, Greetings from the factory' is a new book by Hanna Nilsson and Sofia Østerhus of Byggstudio (Stockholm) published by Everyday Life Books by Apartamento Magazine, with the support of Iittala. Counting a total of 96 pages, The Story of a Mug is the first improved English version of Historien om en Mug, the original Swedish self-published booklet by Byggstudio as part of Iittala’s Local Mug Initiative, launched in Europe in 2008.

Byggstudio held a pop-up café in Stockholm to celebrate the launch of Story of A Mug. The café concept was an interpretation of the themes of the book - such as a long table made as a historical mug timline. Cakes and coffee were served accoringly to each time period. They also organized related activities such as a café coffee painting artist and a large coffee klatsch party with especially designed cakes.

Mitch Griffiths uses a traditional, almost forgotten style of painting, inspired by the light and composition of Old Master paintings, but he uses this style to depict the issues concerning 21st-century British society. His main subject is the transient and throwaway nature of contemporary culture, which is held in stark contrast to the permanence and indelibility of oil paint on canvas.
His large size canvases contain a narrative and energy that express his anxieties about modern life in a symbolic and illustrative way. Astonishingly self-taught, Mitch’s portraits are extremely captivating and contemporary.

First chance to take the bike out for a run today - its been a very wet week in the capital and I am officially a fair-weather cyclist! Nice ride through Regents Park, its apparently no-cycling! Watched a cracking first half of under fourteens football which reminded me of those cold but rather fantastic mornings I used to endure. After that I hit the Monocle shop on Marylebone High Street - a rather well-to-do spot but one of the nicest little high streets in London. Met a nice chap in their who expertly wrapped my mag and I was so chuffed I thought I would show it off. After all you don't get that service in WHSmiths! Also worth noting there is a great little Oxfam too, only stocks books and music. Four Penguins for a quid. Ham and egg baguette, coffee and windy ride back through Camden. Smashing little Saturday.

The brief but notorious career of Bas Jan Ader was mysteriously concluded when he disappeared at sea in 1975. He produced performances, photographs and films now highly regarded for their perversely humorous and melancholy embrace of the impossible!
Here is our favorite film and photograph.

Film - Fall II, 1970 This self-orchestrated 'fall' work depicts him on a bicycle taking a sudden but unsurprising tumble into a canal in Amsterdam.

As another essential cliche of the graphic designers uniform, the fixed wheel bike is all the rage. My distant cousin was well ahead of the curve. This guy could very easily be sat in Hoxton Square eating a Pret a Manger sandwich, drooling over this months Monocle magazine and wondering how his junior designer's salary is going to stretch to that £500 luggage set. Instead the legend that is Wayne Bennington rode in actual races, won actual prize money and even managed to craft that mullet.

NB: Rob and I do both have fixed wheel bikes but prefer EAT!

Great little box and a great little identity that hasn't changed for years and years and years and years! I used to love going into Birds as a young knock kneed lad and getting an iced bun. This is a Derby thing, not everyone has the benefit of one of these on every street corner supplying endless elephants' feet, custard tarts, vanilla slices, toffee donuts, potted beef, bread rolls, lamb and mint slices and much more!

The alternative at Bodrum Airport at 3am for 5 Turkish Lire doesn't really have the same appeal - or does it? After all you can't beat a healthy slice of TEA + CAKE.

A nice little package arrived on Saturday morning - the long awaited By Invitation Only Victionary featuring a little bit of work from the Teacake Studio. Despite the work being rather old it is a treat to see another piece in print. Tasty.

For the Sake of the Image is a fantastic moving image exhibition at the Jerwood Space, London. Curated by the very talented Suki Chan the exhibition features a fantastic range of artists who have explored the idea of the seen and the unseen. On top of the invitation and exhibition poster above we have produced a lovely DVD catalogue and full range of exhibition graphics and signage which will feature on our new site.

Above MARK MURRAY.TV marks a work in progress

A lot has been going on in recent months here at Teacake. With Graham moving to London and Rob staying in Salford the Factory has had to evolve... Rob has moved into a new studio space kindly given to him by the wonderful people at 999 Design where Teacake is now being run full time.

We have been busy working with good friend Nick Greenwood to launch Karina Lax's new site

We have also been working with Manchester Metropolitan University on a joint project with The NHS. Expect to see images soon. The work is back from the printers but needs to be photographed - which brings in nicely our next bit of news we are currently working with Manchester photographer Sebastian Matthers - ( Warehouse Project Resident photographer - Manox) who is going to be shooting images for our new website on location at Night & Day Cafe. Theirs a sneek peek of the location below and also a section of initial logo marks we have created for Seb.

As with the Mark Murray.tv logos above we will let you know how the work progresses over the next few weeks!!

Land Securities

Readers of our Blog will be aware that recently we worked on a project for Land Securities. Land Securities won our services via a design auction held at St Brides London, were we offered "free creative serves on a project brief, to the highest bidder."

The brief set by LS was for us to produce a poster set for their environmental conference, themed ‘Past, Present and Future’ held at Kew Gardens London.

We are currently in the process of photographing the work for our new site however Micheal Johnson as written a great piece about the project with quotes from Land Securities and images of not only the final pieces but a section of our early ideas!
