Amsterdam International Literary Festival

Amsterdam has a rich history as a literary haven - a tradition which continues today as the city is crowned World Book Capital 2008. Tomorrow sees the world's largest book market with over 1,000 stalls which will line 5km of the city's streets. Its a shame we are leaving for manchester today but we found time to visit the exhibition BOEK ZOEKT LEZER (Book seeks reader) at Universiteits Bibliotheek Amsterdam. The exhibition illustrates how Dutch readers have been encouraged to buy books throughout the last five centuries. The exhibition also sheds light on the tradition of author portraits, with objects on display ranging from copper engravings on hand-made paper to glossy photographs. The exhibition is part of the Amsterdam World Book Capital events and National Book Week 2008.

Day Five

Today we worked with Melle's case and gathered lots of letters to bring home.
The week has gone remarkably quickly but fun has been had by all.

We would to thank Ewald for being an impeccable host!
He loves the letters and the letters love him.

TYPOGALLERY NL

Day Four

We have created some printed pieces using inspiration taken from our research for Prom Prom Prom. In just red and blue we have looked at how we can typographically represent the care free nostalgia of the seaside past. We have also produced pieces using a wood block Gill Sans as reference to the British aesthetic we are trying to recreate in a Dutch environment.

We spent the evening with Ewald, his wife and Melle enjoying a barbeque in the leafy suburbs of Amsterdam.

The Next Call

Today we looked at a limited reprint of the Next Call by Henrick Werkman. We are both big fans of this dutch typographer who is said to have "freed the letters" with his hand pressed pieces. We have picked out our favourite pieces from the selection.

Day Three

Today we looked at more ideas for Prom Prom Prom.
We have both die cut and printed a selection of pieces.
Finishing the day with a hand pressed word weave?

Tomorrow we will be printing!

Melle Hammer

Melle Hammer is a Dutch typographer, designer and teacher.
His work can be found here.
We were introduced to him at the Typogallery and currently we are working with the case design in the picture which can be found here The design is based on an ancient method of folding with the name 'Pli' coming from the latin/greek word to mean ply or to fold paper. Melle designed the box in his early twenties and has since worked within advertising, publishing and typography. He has in fact designed a new Dutch stamp that will be available in Holland from the 20th May.

He is todays moment of inspiration.

Printing With Light By Ewald Spieker

PRINTING WITH LIGHT
(based on the symmetry of my halphabet)
white reliefs 60 x 60cm
type annonce (1930) 25cm

I O

the reliefs become signs - structure - words
I O as a word means ME in greek

I O are the two basic forms
(according to pim van den berg and ewald spieker)
of all type and digital language:

I O in letters
(I & O)
I O in ciffers
(one and zero)

X
the unknown factor
a sign as the map of the X
(horizontal end vertical mirroring)

We would like to thank Ewald for todays inspiration and allowing us back into his Dutch paradise!

LIGHT=LIFE

Day Two

Today has been productive and some of the ideas we came with are beginning to take shape. With red and blue for colour and bunting for inspiration we are developing a series of playful pieces we hope to exhibit. Ewald is as intuitive as ever and has offered his experience to mix with our youth. We look forward to tomorrow!

Stamped

We have bought over 200 stamped addressed envelopes each baring examples of the first edition of stamps and associated markings. We are currently sifting through the pile but have already found some examples by some of the best Dutch designers of the last fifty years. When we know more, you will know more!

Day One

Today was the first day back at Ewald's TypoGallery. We are beginning work on a series of projects have used our time to reacquaint ourselves with the letters. Our hands are already dirty and we have worked our essential press operating muscles.

Tomorrow we will work on Prom Prom Prom.

We are very excited to announce our return to Amsterdam.

We are here to work with Ewald Spiker at his Typogallery on ideas for our upcoming exhibtion and a select few personal projects. We will be posting a blog a day with lots of big photographs and words of wisdom, so be sure to pop back over the coming week to see what we get up to.
